Another rotation of specialists from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) took place at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant. The 52nd monitoring mission commenced, replacing the previous team. The former team had worked at the plant for over three weeks, which was longer than usual, spending Christmas and New Year's festivities in the NPP satellite town in southern Ukraine.
The experts of the 52nd mission will focus on communicating with representatives of the SUNPP departments responsible for various areas of activity. Plant walkdowns and a meeting with representatives of the nuclear safety inspectorate at the SUNPP are planned. Every day, experts will receive updated information from the South Ukraine NPP on the technical condition of power units and safety, which will be forwarded to the IAEA headquarters. Particular attention will be paid to issues of physical and nuclear protection of power facilities, which is crucial in the context of martial law.
Acting Deputy Director General for Quality and Management Andrii Zakharchenko noted, “The presence of a permanent IAEA monitoring mission at the NPP is an opportunity to convey to the international community that we operate power units in compliance with all international safety standards. One of the primary tasks of the experts is to monitor the situation at the NPP industrial site due to aggression from our northern neighbor and to promptly report this information to the agency's headquarters. The mission plays a key role in this regard.”
The team of experts from the IAEA's 52nd mission will work for three weeks, after which another rotation will take place.
