South Ukraine NPP

South Ukraine NPP is located in the south of Ukraine in the Mykolaiv region, near the Southern Buh River at a distance of 3 km from the town of Pivdennoukrainsk. Favorable environmental conditions, convenient geographical location, ground features, and the Southern Buh River proved to be almost an ideal place for the construction of a powerful South Ukraine Power Complex, composed of South Ukraine NPP, Oleksandrivska HPP, Tashlyk HPSPP, and water reservoir system. In terms of production, the South Ukraine Power Complex caters to the needs of electricity and provides a normal living and working environment for a region with a population of over 5 million people.

History of creation

Start of construction of the station

1975

Number of power units

3

Type of reactor

VVER-1000

Total power

3,000 MW

The main stages of construction:

In 1982, the first VVER-1000\302 unit with a capacity of 1000 MW was put into operation.

In December 2013, the operational lifetime of SUNPP unit 1 was extended for 10 years (license EO No 001019).

In 1985, the second VVER-1000\338 unit with a capacity of 1000 MW was put into operation. In December 2015, the operational lifetime of SUNPP unit 2 was extended for 10 years (license EO No 001047).

In 1989, the third VVER-1000\320 unit with a capacity of 1000 MW was put into operation.

In December 2019, the operational lifetime of SUNPP unit 3 was extended for 10 years (license EO No 000064).

Oleksandrivska HPP

In 1999, Oleksandrivska HPP with an installed capacity of 25 MW was commissioned.

Oleksandrivska HPP has two hydropower units.

Tashlyk HPSPP

In 1981, construction of Tashlyk HPSPP with a total capacity of 3,000 MW began.

In 2006, the first storage pump of Tashlyk HPSPP was accepted for operation.

In 2007, the second storage pump of Tashlyk HPSPP was accepted for operation.

In 2021, the first test run of the third storage pump of Tashlyk HPSPP was carried out.

The operation of the third storage pump creates new opportunities for balancing and more efficient operation of the domestic nuclear generation, which is especially relevant during the winter peak loads.

On June 14, 2012, Tashlyk HPSPP produced the first billion kilowatt-hours since the beginning of its generation.

The power complex generates almost 17-20 bln kW of electricity annually.

It is the only energy company in Ukraine that comprehensively uses basic nuclear, load-following hydro- and pumped-storage capacities. South Ukraine NPP is a pioneer among domestic nuclear power plants in diversifying the nuclear fuel supply. For the first time in Ukraine, fresh nuclear fuel manufactured by the U.S. Westinghouse was loaded at the SUNPP, which marked the beginning of Ukraine's successful path to diversification of nuclear fuel supplies. Since 2018 and 2020, SUNPP unit 3 and unit 2, respectively, have operated using only Westinghouse fuel.
