The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has launched its 55th monitoring mission at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant. International experts keep working on Ukrainian nuclear facilities amid a full-scale war and regular attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.

On March 13, an official handover ceremony between the agency’s rotating teams took place at the plant site. During a working meeting attended by specialists from the South Ukraine NPP, the results of the previous expert group’s work were summarized, and the main areas of activity for the new mission were identified.

International experts will conduct independent monitoring of nuclear and radiation safety, as well as maintain a professional dialogue with plant personnel regarding the current situation at the facility.

Natalia Kychak, Head of the Department of International Cooperation and Technical Assistance at the SUNPP, emphasized that the presence of the IAEA mission remains a crucial element of international oversight and support for the safe operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

“The mission’s key task is to ensure the seven indispensable pillars for nuclear safety and security are met, which is particularly important in the context of russian aggression against Ukraine. These actions support the reliable and smooth operation of nuclear power plants, reduce threats to radiation and nuclear safety, and maintain openness and trust within the international community,” she noted.

The work of the IAEA’s 55th monitoring mission at the South Ukraine NPP will last three weeks. Following this, the facility will undergo a routine scheduled rotation of international experts, who will continue to independently monitor compliance with nuclear and radiation safety standards.
