On July 25, 2019, the SNRIU license for the right to carry out activities at the “operation” stage of the life cycle of the nuclear facility of Khmelnytska NPP Unit 1 was obtained.
Construction of the plant began in 1981, and the first power unit was put into commercial operation at the end of 1987. Sites for three more units were prepared. Construction of the second power unit began in 1983 and was scheduled to begin in late 1991. At the time of the moratorium on the construction of new nuclear power plants, the main technological units were installed and personnel were trained.
The construction of Khmelnytsky NPP Unit 2 was resumed in 1993, and on August 8, 2004, it was connected to the integrated power system of Ukraine. In September 2005, the unit was put into commercial operation.
At present, the NPP site remains the most promising for the expansion of Ukrainian nuclear power facilities. It is the most promising Ukrainian NPP in terms of realizing Ukraine's export potential in the European energy market.
Today, the construction of new power units is among the priorities of Khmelnytsky NPP.
The completion of new power units at Khmelnytsky NPP will increase production capacity and preserve the key importance of nuclear generation for the Ukrainian economy.
