NNEGC “Energoatom” continues to introduce nuclear power sector and the industry history to the schoolchildren. On this occasion, schoolchildren of Kyiv Lyceum No. 38 visited the Company office. The topic of the lecture, which Energoatom specialists conducted for eighth-graders, was the Chernobyl tragedy – the largest environmental disaster of contemporaneity.
The popular science story about the causes of the accident and the historical conditions that led to that aroused interest among the schoolchildren, because their teachers, who had experienced those events at a young age, often shared with their students memories of life in Kyiv at that time.
The communication with the schoolchildren demonstrated how important the lessons of the past were. Nuclear employees told how the events at the Chernobyl NPP influenced approaches to safety in nuclear power industry and emphasized that safety issues were a priority in the industry at the time being.
The children learned about the basic principles of nuclear power industry, why it was the key to a carbon-free future, and received answers to their questions. In addition, they solidified their knowledge through an improvised quiz.
Such meetings with nuclear specialists can be the first step towards choosing a profession, because interest in science related to modern technologies often arises during such events.
