This week, Zaporizhzhia NPP was twice on the verge of a complete blackout, which posed a grave threat to nuclear and radiation safety.
The reason for this was shelling by the russian occupiers, which damaged one of the power lines on the right bank of the Dnipro River in the territory controlled by Ukraine. Due to the high threat of repeated shelling, power engineers have been unable to access the damaged area to carry out repairs until today.
Owing to the hard work of Ukrainian power professionals, the line has been restored, so the plant is now powered from two sources. This allows us to maintain the power units that are in a state of cold shutdown.
At the same time, the situation remains critical. Just the complete return of Zaporizhzhia NPP under the control of Energoatom can guarantee nuclear and radiation safety, eliminating further risks arising from the actions of the russian occupiers.
“For the second time in a week, Zaporizhzhia NPP is on the verge of a complete blackout. This is a consequence of targeted attacks by the russian occupiers, which jeopardize not only the nuclear safety of Ukraine but also the stability of the entire European region. The hostilities create catastrophic risks,” said Energoatom CEO Petro Kotin.
We are grateful to Ukrainian power engineers for their professionalism and heroism and call on the international community to increase pressure on russia to immediately de-occupy the plant.
