Corporate Governance in the Public Sector: Ukraine and Canada Discuss Reform Priorities

Rumina Velshi, Chair of the Supervisory Board of JSC NNEGC Energoatom, joined a roundtable discussion bringing together representatives of the Government of Ukraine, the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, and the energy sector players as well. The event was arranged by the Canada-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce.

Speakers examined the key priorities for advancing corporate governance reform in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of building independent, resilient, and effective institutions capable of operating free from political cycles.

During the discussion, Rumina Velshi highlighted the successful progress of Energoatom's corporatization pathway and welcomed the reforms being implemented across the company. She noted that the transformation is strengthening corporate governance, enhancing transparency and accountability, and embedding international best practices. According to Velshi, these reforms are helping restore trust, strengthen oversight, and reinforce the company's long-term institutional resilience.

The discussion focused on several key areas, including further improvements to Ukraine's corporate governance legislation, the professional development of supervisory board members and senior management, strengthening independent audits and external reviews, enhancing corporate risk management, reinforcing cybersecurity, and adopting modern governance practices.

The rountable delegates concluded that implementing internationally recognized corporate governance standards is essential to improving the performance of state-owned enterprises, reinforcing the confidence of international partners and investors, and supporting Ukraine's recovery and long-term economic development.
