JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom” continues to safely operate three nuclear power plants amid the challenges of the full-scale war. Despite unprecedented risks associated with russian aggression, the company ensures the reliable operation of its power units and strictly adheres to high standards of nuclear and radiation safety.
This was stated by Rumina Velshi, Chair of Energoatom’s Supervisory Board, in an interview with Energy Intelligence. She is the former head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, joined the company’s Supervisory Board in December 2025 and currently chair the body.
According to Rumina Velshi, despite the successful operation of Ukrainian NPPs, severe risks to nuclear safety persist. These are primarily driven by russia’s illegal occupation of the ZaporizhzhiaNPP, attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, and periodic drone strikes near the Chornobyl NPP site.
The interview also highlights the activities of Energoatom’s Supervisory Board, corporate governance matters, and initiatives aimed at enhancing the company’s operational transparency.
Rumina Velshi emphasizes that Energoatom’s experience in ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants during wartime is unique and of significant interest to the international nuclear community. In her view, the lessons learned today by the Ukrainian nuclear power sector can substantially contribute to developing a global nuclear safety culture and improving preparedness for crises.
