The pupils of the Private Full-Day School “KMDS Holosiiv” who visited NNEGC “Energoatom” last Friday, got a lot of useful information about methods of combating global climate change. The Company prepared a lecture on this topic: "How to counteract global climate change on the planet? The role of nuclear power plants”.
Energoatom specialists explanation is the following: the main sources of greenhouse emissions are the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) in the energy and metallurgical sectors, transport emissions and deforestation. All these processes contribute to the release of excessive amounts of CO₂ and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which creates a “heat trap” and causes global warming.
Nuclear power industry emits almost no carbon in the process of generating electricity, so it is considered a low-carbon power source and, accordingly, part of the solution to the problem of climate change. It provides a stable power supply without environment disadvantage, which makes it an important component of combating climate changes.
The schoolchildren took part in a business game that helped them find ways to combat global warming. The game algorithm consisted of several important stages:
• Splitting into 3 expert teams.
• Analysis of the causes of the greenhouse effect: pupils received forms with sources of emissions and identified the main factors of climate change.
• Brainstorming: development of measures to combat global warming.
• Presentation of ideas: each group delegated a speaker who presented the solutions developed.
• Evaluation and analysis: moderators summarized and identified the most effective measures.
The educational events of this kind contribute to the formation of environmental awareness among young people; help them understand the role of low-carbon power sources, primarily nuclear power. These events teach them to think critically, analyze facts, and find ways to solve global problems.
NNEGC “Energoatom” keeps on developing educational programs for schoolchildren, and that meeting was the beginning of a series of environmental events for senior pupils of the Vsesvit network of private educational institutions. Such meetings will help young people better understand environmental challenges and the role of modern technologies in overcoming them.
