In reply to numerous requests from media representatives for information about the probable startup of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, we hereby inform you of the following.
National Nuclear Power Generating Company “Energoatom” categorically condemns any attempts to legitimize the illegal management of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
The fact that the largest nuclear power plant in Europe has been under illegal russian occupation since 2022 creates unacceptable safety risks and violates international conventions on nuclear and radiation safety.
JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom” emphasizes:
- The continued presence of the Zaporizhzhia NPP under occupation is categorically unacceptable. Any talk about the “restart” of the ZNPP units under the control of “rosatom” representatives is a direct violation of nuclear and radiation safety standards. The license to operate the ZNPP is held by its legal operator, JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”, and only Ukrainian specialists have the right and competence to operate the plant.
- The technical state of the ZNPP and the conditions created by the invaders at the occupied plant (such as: limited communication lines with the power grid, exhaustion of design service life for fuel and equipment, unqualified unlicensed personnel, non-availability of ultimate heat sink, etc.) provide solid grounds to confirm that restarting the plant in its current state is technically impossible.
- The occupation has significantly worsened the condition of critical safety systems. Lack of proper maintenance, violation of repair schedules, lack of access to original spare parts, and the inability to conduct proper inspections lead to critical degradation of the equipment and create the prerequisites for potential emergencies.
- Statements about the “professional management” of the plant by representatives of “rosatom” do not correspond to reality.
- The presence of armed formations and military equipment on the territory of the nuclear facility, as well as the further militarization of the plant and the adjacent occupied territories, are key risk factors that cannot be ignored.
- Blocking access for the IAEA mission inspectors to a number of areas and premises of the Zaporizhzhia NPP creates obstacles to an objective assessment of the technical state of the NPP systems and components, which are vital for its safety.
The Company once again states that the only way to restore safety at the Zaporizhzhia NPP is plant full de-occupation and return to the control of its legal operator, JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”.
