At the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, two important decisions concerning Ukraine were adopted.
The Canadian resolution on nuclear safety, security and safeguards in Ukraine, adopted by 63 votes in favour, reaffirms the fundamental principles of ensuring nuclear safety and upholding international law. It also calls for the removal of unauthorized russian military and other personnel from the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
The IAEA stressed that all Ukrainian nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities, including the ZNPP, must be operated safely under the full sovereign control of Ukraine.
The resolution also provides that the issue of “Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards in Ukraine” will remain on the agenda of the next, 71st IAEA General Conference in 2027.
In addition, 49 IAEA Member States and the European Union joined a statement calling for the immediate release of detained Ukrainian employees of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
