NNEGC “Energoatom” is actively involved in projects to research and analyze the safety and efficiency of small modular reactors with a view to introducing the technology in Ukraine.
Energoatom and the Ministry of Energy are establishing cooperation with global companies that are developing SMR technologies: Holtec International, Westinghouse, NuScale Power (USA), and others.
Pre-project work is underway to prepare for the implementation of SMR technologies and select sites for the placement of units.
The advantages of SMRs are:
- modular design and short construction time;
- enhanced safety and reliability;
- increased load-following capabilities – the capability of operation in the balancing power market;
- possibility of commercial hydrogen production, heating, and water desalination;
- support for intermittent renewables.
Furthermore, in the years ahead, SMRs will play a key role in the gradual replacement of coal-fired thermal power plants to be decommissioned.
