According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, recent smoke outbreak observed in the vicinity of the Zaporizhzhia NPP was caused by a brush fire in a tree line at a safe distance from the industrial site of the plant.
As of now, there is no immediate threat to nuclear safety and security at the plant. However, the situation remains potentially hazardous due to the ongoing occupation of the nuclear facility by russian troops, who systematically violate nuclear, radiation, and fire safety regulations.
“Causing fire-prone conditions near Europe's largest nuclear facility is yet another example of the occupiers' reckless disregard for a critical infrastructure site. russian negligence keeps posing a persistent threat of disaster with consequences that could extend far beyond Ukraine's borders,” said Petro Kotin, head of JSC ”NNEGC “Energoatom“
The Zaporizhzhia NPP must be immediately demilitarized and brought back under full control of Ukraine and its legitimate operator - JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”! This is the only way to ensure the nuclear plant's reliable and safe operation, as well as the security within the entire European region.
