Since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP has already experienced 26 blackouts, 14 of them during the first eight months of 2026 alone.
Each loss of off-site power forces the plant to switch to backup power sources and poses additional risks to nuclear and radiation safety.
“The situation at the ZNPP is deteriorating, and we see equipment degradation. The condition of the diesel generator plants is of particular concern. Frequently operating the diesel generators for short periods places significant load on the equipment, resulting in increased wear,” said Energoatom CEO Pavlo Kovtoniuk.
Repeated switching to backup power and the increasing strain on equipment are a direct consequence of the incompetence of the occupation administration, which is failing to ensure the proper operation of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
The return of the ZNPP to the full controls of Ukraine and its legitimate operator, JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”, is the only necessary condition for the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
