On August 28, the Board of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine considered the results of the State Nuclear and Radiation Safety Examination of Periodic Safety Review Report (PSRR) of the Khmelnytskyi NPP Unit 2.
Andrii Koziura, Director General of the branch “SS KhNPP”, reported the results of the review.
According to regulatory documents, a periodic safety review is carried out every ten years from the start of operation. For the Khmelnytskyi NPP Unit 2, this is the second assessment of this type. All stages have been completed within the established deadlines.
In particular, the materials of the final safety analysis report have been updated, the periodic safety review report has been developed, the state nuclear and radiation safety examination has been conducted, and the deviations based on the examination’s remarks have been fixed.
Within the review framework, an analysis of 14 safety factors was carried out, in particular, operating conditions of systems and structures, operational safety, management, and environmental impact.
Specialists from the operating organization, contractors, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety were involved in the activities. Based on the review results, no safety deficiencies were identified that could put further operation in doubt.
At the same time, areas for improvement were identified; corrective measures were developed for those.
Therefore, the results confirmed the possibility to provide further safe operation of the Khmelnytskyi NPP Unit 2 and protect plant personnel, population and the environment.
