JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom” summarizes the results of the competition of student scientific and practical works “Nuclear Energy and Industry”, the purpose of which is not only to support young scientists, but also to open up real opportunities for their professional development in the nuclear industry.

For the first time, the Company held the competition in this format, involving recognized nuclear specialists as a jury. In total, the competition received 17 papers developed by students of leading technical universities of Ukraine: National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Odesa Polytechnic National University, Vinnytsia National Technical University, National University of Water and Environmental Engineering (Rivne), National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”.

Twelve students reached the final; they demonstrated a high level of knowledge and an innovative approach to solving current tasks of nuclear industry. Director of the branch “SS “Scientific and Technical Center” and Jury Chairman Oleh Zelenyi emphasized:

“It is nice to see that students actively participated in the competition, because it is an evidence of their potential and desire for development. The topic of the papers is impressive. Choosing nuclear energy as a career path is a confident step into the future.

NNEGC “Energoatom” remains the key pillar of Ukraine’s energy security, producing more than half of all the country’s electricity. The industry is stable, promising and has extensive development plans – from new power units with VVER-1000 and AP1000 reactors to the introduction of small modular reactors.”

After listening to the scientific reports, a member of the jury, Senior Researcher of the Institute for Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Yevhen Malyi, stressed: “The competition was marked by high activity: a significant number of works were submitted, most of them were distinguished by depth of content, interesting ideas and high-quality execution. The students made significant efforts, carefully studying the professional literature, conducting researches and analyzing the data. Such type of work requires time, perseverance and intellectual curiosity, and we highly appreciate everyone’s contribution.”

According to the results of the competition of scientific and practical student works, approved in the protocol by Head of JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom” Petro Kotin, the winners were determined.

Vladyslav Khymich (Vinnytsia National Technical University, 4th year) won the Grand Prix of the competition with the paper “Research on the protection of 6 kV electrical grids of the NPP house loads”.

The first place was won by Oksana Dovha (National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, 5th year), who presented the paper “Development of a 17x17 fuel assembly model for AP-1000 reactor with square lattice”.

The second place was shared by Nazar Voznyuk (National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, 1st year of master’s degree) with the topic “Development of microprocessor-based maximum current protection for the power supply system for the VVER-1000 unit house loads” and Hanna Stashchuk (National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, 5th year), with the research “Use of nuclear installations for the purpose of desalination of sea water”.

Roman Zmerzlyi (Odesa Polytechnic National University, 6th year) took the third place with the paper “Thermal hydraulic calculation for the VVER-1000 reactor when using TRISO nuclear fuel”.

The following persons received the stimulating prizes:

  • Maksym Boroday (National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, 3rd year) – “Acoustic heat exchanger cleaning systems”.
  • Dmytro Guba (National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, 5th year) – “Analysis of opportunities in the use of small modular reactors in maneuvering modes”.
  • Dmytro Protsenko (National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, 5th year) - "Analysis of the VVER-1000 reactor core operation”.

Energoatom expresses gratitude to the scientific supervisors who accompanied the participants and to the organizing committee of the competition for the professional organization and support of young scientists.

The winners will receive well-deserved awards, and other participants – stimulating prizes.
