Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, stresses that the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP continues to pose serious safety risks.

“The safety situation at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) remains precarious, with six of the seven pillars of nuclear and radiation safety compromised. Only one off-site power line remains, posing serious safety risks. All six reactors are in cold shutdown, and none of them can be safely restarted under current conditions,” the IAEA Director General noted in his speech before the start of the Agency’s Board of Governors.

Rafael Grossi also reported on the decrease in the water level in the cooling pond.

“The cooling pond level has dropped to 13.4 m, nearing the 12.0 m threshold below which cooling systems fail. measures for isolating the intake channel provide short-term relief, but a long-term solution is required, such as the construction of a pumping station,” the IAEA Director General added.

Energoatom once again emphasizes, the Zaporizhzhia NPP must be demilitarized as soon as possible, to the last occupant, and returned to the full control of Ukraine and its legal operator, JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”. Only this will guarantee the reliable and safe operation of the plant, as well as the security within the entire European region.
