Representatives of Energoatom, headed by Acting CEO Pavlo Kovtonyuk, visited the 5th edition of ReBuild Ukraine: Construction & Energy Exhibition & Conference, which took place in Warsaw on November 13-14.
The energy conference “Energy Recovery: Building a Stronger Ukrainian Energy Sector” was conducted within the limits of that event, and Pavlo Kovtonyuk took part in it. As a speaker at the panel discussion: “Development of the Nuclear Sector: Innovation, Investment, Future,” he makes an emphasis that nuclear generation is the foundation of the Ukrainian energy system, which, despite all the challenges of wartime, remains a key element of the country recovery and development, providing over 55% of national electricity production.
The head of Energoatom reminded the participants of the event about the russian occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which has been ongoing since March 2022. During this time, the occupiers have violated all seven indispensable pillars of nuclear safety and security.
At the same time, Pavlo Kovtonyuk stresses that other operating Ukrainian nuclear power plants are under the control of Energoatom and operate safely. The main risks to their operation today are associated with targeted attacks by the enemy on energy infrastructure, in particular substations, which are critical for the stable operation and nuclear safety of the NPP. Despite constant shelling, Ukrainian nuclear employees ensure the safe operation of all power units located in the territory controlled by Ukraine.
The head of NNEGC also expressed gratitude to international partners and the IAEA for their constant support and assistance. He told the conference participants about new and modernization projects of Energoatom, in particular, about the establishment of native nuclear fuel fabrication using Westinghouse technology, as well as the prospects for the introduction of small modular reactor technologies in Ukraine.
