During his 11th visit to Ukraine since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi noted that the expansion of the nuclear fleet is a sovereign decision of every country. At the same time, he emphasized that Ukrainian nuclear generation has become the backbone of the power system during the most difficult time for the country.

“We believe that it is a sovereign decision of every country what kind of projects it is going to have in energy sector. We are of the impression that in the case of Ukraine, it is a wise decision because, as we see today, nuclear energy has been the backbone that has sustained the economy through a very difficult time of the war,” he said.

Raphael Grossi noted the high level of readiness of KhNPP Units 3 & 4 and stated that IAEA experts have already started “some analytical work on specific areas where they could provide a safety assessment of the project.”

“The construction of new power units is a strategic task for Ukraine, as it guarantees our energy security and economic stability. We have already proved that nuclear power remains the most reliable source of electricity, and the completion of KhNPP will allow us to strengthen this position,” said Energoatom CEO Petro Kotin.
