Head of Energoatom Petro Kotin held a working meeting with Westinghouse Electric Company Managing Director Aziz Dag and President of Long-Term Operations Division Luca Oriani. The parties discussed key aspects of enhancing safety of the Khmelnytskyi Units 3 and 4, to be completed using equipment from the Bulgarian Belene NPP.

Westinghouse is currently conducting a GAP analysis of the Khmelnytskyi 3 and 4 project to implement advanced safety systems, in particular long-term heat removal from reactor containment. This will allow future Ukrainian VVER-1000 reactors to achieve the safety level of advanced Westinghouse AP1000 reactors.

Similar systems have already been installed at the Rivne NPP.

The meeting also agreed to continue working on adapting Westinghouse fuel for Khmelnytskyi 3 and Khmelnytskyi 4 units, including the option of an 18-month refueling cycle.

A joint team of Energoatom and Westinghouse specialists will work on mentioned projects.
