Specialists of the International Atomic Energy Agency continue to assess the state of the infrastructure of the power grid, which is required for the nuclear safety of Ukrainian nuclear facilities.

The work of the IAEA experts is a continuation of the agreements reached during the meeting of Director General of the Agency Raphael Grossi with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi. The first phase of the infrastructure inspection was conducted in September 2024.

At the request of the Government of Ukraine, during October 21-27, the Agency employees, together with specialists of JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”, representatives of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and Ukrenergo, visited the electrical substations of Ukrenergo, which are determined to be critical for ensuring the reliable operation of nuclear power plants, inspected the consequences of actual damage to the energy infrastructure as a result of missile attacks of the russian federation, and assessed the current state of protection of those facilities and the state of restoration work.

The IAEA experts discussed with the representatives of Energoatom measures to ensure the reliability of the external power supply of the plants during transient processes in the grid, additional actions that can be taken to enhance NPP safety and the security of Ukrenergo electrical substations, which are important for safe operation of NPPs. The parties also raised the issue of the IAEA’s role in supporting nuclear safety and preventing nuclear accidents in conditions of full-scale war.

From the Ukrainian side, the Directors General of the Khmelnytskyi and South Ukraine NPPs, as well as specialists of the Energoatom Company, took part in the discussions.

“The work of IAEA experts at Ukrenergo substations, which are critical for the operation of nuclear power plants, is extremely important for the stable and safe functioning of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Together with the IAEA, we are working on increasing the reliability of external power supply to guarantee uninterrupted operation of our NPPs and avoid any risks to nuclear safety,” Head of Energoatom Petro Kotin commented.
