Completion of Khmelnytskyi NPP power units will strengthen a key sector of national security
In his commentary to RBC-Ukraine, People's Deputy Anatolii Kostyukh emphasized the need for urgent adoption of a law that will allow the completion of the construction of power units 3 and 4 at Khmelnytskyi NPP. He stressed that this project is a historic chance for Ukraine's energy independence.
"Owing to this law, we will be able to commission two power units with a total capacity of 2.2 GW. This is the cheapest type of energy, and all nuclear power plants are state-owned. NPPs are a guarantee of stable electricity supply in Ukraine," Anatolii Kostyukh noted.
Currently, nuclear power plants provide 60% of Ukraine's electricity needs.
According to him, the country could avoid mass power outages even in the most challenging periods due to nuclear power.
"If it wasn't for nuclear power, we would have been sitting by candlelight for a long time," the People's Deputy added.
The construction of power unit 3, which is 80% ready, is planned to be completed in two to three years after the adoption of the law. Power unit 4 is 25% ready and will be completed in the next year and a half. These capacities will become critically important for providing the country with electricity. The project will be financed from the own resources of NNEGC “Energoatom” and loans, without involving budget funds.
As a reminder, almost 80% of Ukrainians support completing the power units at KhNPP. Citizens see this step as a path to energy independence and economic stability.
