The degradation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has been under racist occupation since March 4, 2022, is intensifying. The Europe’s largest nuclear power plant is again on the verge of blackout.

On August 22, russian shelling damaged the 330 kV external overhead line “Zaporizhzhia TPP – Ferosplavna”, through which the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP received power from the Ukrainian power grid for house loads.

Currently, the ZNPP is connected to the Ukrainian power grid by only one power transmission line – 750 kV “Dniprovska”. In the event of its damage, an emergency will occur due to the loss of external power to the pumps that cool the reactor cores and spent fuel ponds of the ZNPP.

Under the “control” of the russian invaders, who are at the temporarily occupied ZNPP, degradation is constantly intensifying in all areas of operation. In addition to the recent fire, when one of the two existing cooling towers of the nuclear power plant completely burned down due to negligence or deliberate incendiary fire, the threat of losing the plant’s external power supply has been added now. After all, the invaders’ lack of competency, qualified and licensed personnel and the transformation of the ZNPP into a military base make it impossible to provide accident/free operation of the plant.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant must immediately come under the full control of Ukraine, its legal operator – Energoatom, and Russia must withdraw its troops and military equipment from the plant. This is the only way to restore the nuclear and radiation safety of the entire continent!

We remind you that since the beginning of the russian occupation, the Zaporizhzhia NPP has already experienced eight complete blackouts and one partial one – with the start of emergency diesel generators and safety systems. Their failure may result in an emergency.
