On July 11, 2024, the UN General Assembly voted in favor of the resolution “Safety and security of nuclear facilities of Ukraine, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant”.
The document, in particular:
demands that the russian federation:
- immediately cease its aggression against Ukraine and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine;
- urgently withdraw its military and other unauthorized personnel from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and immediately return the plant to the full control of Ukraine;
condemns:
- the failure of the russian federation to implement relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the General Conference and the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency;
calls upon the russian federation:
- for immediate cessation of the attacks against critical energy infrastructure of Ukraine, which increase the risk of a nuclear accident;
- until it returns the ZNPP to the full control of Ukraine, to provide the International Atomic Energy Agency Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhia with timely and full access to all areas at the plant;
- to immediately remove all anti-personnel mines placed along the perimeter of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, etc.
According to Energoatom CEO Petro Kotin, the situation at the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP remains difficult.
“The adopted resolution is a great support for us in addressing the issue of returning ZNPP under Ukrainian control. With the assistance of the civilized world, we are approaching the end of russian lawlessness at the ZNPP. russia must be held accountable for all the threats to nuclear and radiation safety that they have created at the ZNPP. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must be under the full sovereign control of Ukraine and its legitimate operator, Energoatom. The ruscists must leave the nuclear facility!” he emphasized.
