The construction project in Ukraine of a plant for the manufacture of small modular reactors and components for the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) is gathering pace
On June 12, 2024, Head of JSC “Energoatom” Petro Kotin and Vice President of Ukraine Operations for Holtec International Riaz Awan held a joint meeting with the participation of the Company's managers and specialists. The selection of a site for the construction of a plant in Ukraine for the manufacture of small modular reactors and components for the Centralized Spent Fuel Storage Facility using the technology of Holtec was discussed. The meeting was held in one of the branches of JSC “Energoatom”, which may become the location of the future plant.
“Currently, all components are manufactured in the United States. At the same time, the construction of the necessary capacities will give Energoatom the opportunity to manufacture components for the CSFSF in Ukraine. This will allow us to meet the needs not only of domestic nuclear power plants, but also to export to other European countries,” Petro Kotin said.
The following issues were discussed:
- necessary requirements for the plant construction site;
- logistic component;
- attracting qualified specialists of Energoatom and Holtec to construction;
- security of the future facility in view of the ongoing russian aggression in Ukraine.
“We will also manufacture components for SMRs in Ukraine. And the construction of the plant for these two directions, firstly, will be of great importance for strengthening the national economy. And, secondly, it will demonstrate to the world that Ukraine occupies one of the key positions in the development of nuclear generation, turning our country into a real hub of nuclear technologies,” Petro Kotin said.
For his part, Riaz Awan, Holtec International Vice President highly appreciated the cooperation between the companies and emphasized the professionalism of NNEGC management and, as a result, the partners' confidence in Energoatom, despite the full-scale invasion of russia. According to Holtec Vice President, project implementation for the new manufacturing plant construction will have a positive economic and financial effect, as well as provide Ukraine with the opportunity to export the CSFSF systems, small modular reactors and their components of domestic production to European countries and the whole world.
We remind you that in April 2024, the companies signed the General Agreement on the transfer of Holtec technology for the production of SMR components in Ukraine to JSC “Energoatom”. Another item envisages the establishment of a Ukrainian facility for the manufacture of the CSFSF components.
