Energoatom plans to create a Ukrainian hub of nuclear technologies

Within the framework of participation in the World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE), Petro Kotin, President of SE "NNEGC "Energoatom", during his speech at the panel session, spoke about the new reactor programs existing in Ukraine.

Petro Kotin noted that Ukraine has a well-developed nuclear energy program. In particular, Energoatom has the potential and experience of safe operation of nuclear power plants, which proved their reliability during the barbarous war unleashed by russia against Ukraine.

"Currently, the nuclear industry covers over 55% of the country's total electricity needs. The new Energy Strategy of Ukraine assigns a special role to nuclear energy to achieve carbon neutrality in the energy sector by 2050. The strategy envisages the development of modern and safe "green" and nuclear power generation based on cutting-edge technologies, in particular by deploying AP1000 reactors and small modular reactors," said President of NNEGC.

According to the Head of Energoatom, Ukraine has ambitious plans to increase nuclear power from current 13.8 GW to over 20 GW.

These objectives will be achieved through the implementation of the following projects:

  • completion of the Khmelnytska NPP power units 3 and 4;
  • construction of two Westinghouse AP1000 power units at the Khmelnytska NPP;
  • deployment of small modular reactors and microreactors.

"We plan to create a Ukrainian nuclear technology hub, including mechanical engineering and commercial manufacture of essential equipment and components for nuclear reactors. The introduction of innovative nuclear technologies will make Ukraine a leader in the nuclear field with unique experience and its own technological solutions. Tangible success in these projects can be expected when we completely expel the aggressor from our land, which is now being heroically defended by the Armed Forces of Ukraine," Petro Kotin stressed.

The implementation of this road map will allow achieving long-term energy goals, increasing the volume of carbon-free nuclear generation and maintaining its dominant share in the overall energy mix.
