Ukrainian nuclear regulator limited the operation of power units at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP – Petro Kotin
After the meeting, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine limited the validity of licenses for the operation of power units at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.
«Actually, the ZNPP operation is limited at the energy capacity levels, thus the power plant can only be in a cold shutdown mode and a repair state. This prohibition will also apply to the two power units that are currently in a hot shutdown mode after they are transferred to a cold shutdown mode,» the President of SE «NNEGC «Energoatom» Petro Kotin said.
He recalled that the relevant decision of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine has limited the operation of ZNPP power units 3, 4, 5 and 6 since February 10, 2023, due to a breach of nuclear and radiation safety requirements. In particular, it is about the deployment of ruscist military equipment and weapons on the power plant site, damage to the transmission lines linking the facility to the energy system of Ukraine as well as shelling of the ZNPP site. Furthermore, due to the power plant’s idleness and the shutdown of all its power units, there is a constant gradual degradation of systems and equipment.
The decision to renew the license terms will be made by the regulator upon the ZNPP de-occupation, the return of the power plant to the control of the legitimate operator – Energoatom, as well as conducting inspection and restoration works.
