The first stage of South-Ukraine NPP service water system put into operation
Today, on June 1, 2021, the first two spray ponds were commissioned under the project «Reconstruction of the service water system at Tashlyk reservoir and spray cooling ponds of South-Ukraine NPP». They are designed to improve the cooling system of the South-Ukraine NPP power units during the warm season.
The celebrations on the occasion of the launch of the first stage of spray cooling ponds were attended by Acting President of SE NNEGC Energoatom Petro Kotin, Chairman of the Board of NPC Ukrenergo Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, People's Deputy of Ukraine Artem Chornomorov as well as Mayor of Yuzhnoukrainsk Valeriy Onufrienko.
«This year, the third and fourth spray cooling ponds out of the five planned and the third hydro unit of the Tashlyk HPSPP will also be put into operation, whereas the completion of the reconstruction and launch of the spray cooling pond № 5 is scheduled for 2022,» said Petro Kotin. «From the implementation of this project, we expect an increase in electricity production by the South-Ukraine NPP in the summer season by 40%.»
He added that the use of modern technologies and equipment during construction will provide an opportunity to ramp up electricity production to 2549 million kWh according to the maximum estimates.
The head of Energoatom expressed gratitude to the general contractor – PJSC "Yuzhenergobud" and the manufacturer of pumping equipment – the Italian company Termomeccanica Pompe, which met the deadline.
According to experts, the commissioning of five spray cooling ponds will reduce the temperature of the circulating water by 7-8 ° C, about by 1.4 ° C at each spray cooling pond. This will enable to avoid losses of electricity production at SUNPP and to lift the capacity limit of nuclear power units during the hot period of the year. After all, today the Tashlyk Reservoir provides SUNPP operation at a nominal capacity of 3,000 MW only in the cold season. In summer, due to the increase in circulating water temperature, the plant's capacity is limited to 1,800 MW while on particularly hot days – up to 1,500 MW.
The project also envisages the arrangement of a baffle plate in the waters of the Tashlyk Reservoir and the construction of a complex of facilities for filling and recharging the cooling reservoir. This will improve the water-chemical and temperature regimes of the cooling pond, which will positively affect the local flora and fauna.
The estimated cost of construction of the complex of five spray pools is UAH 3.4 billion, as of April 1, 2021, works in the amount of UAH 2.3 billion have been completed. The total cost of the THPSPP reconstruction project is UAH 14.25 billion, as of May 1, 2021, UAH 3.3 billion has been financed.
The project cost includes UAH 910.6 million for the Social and Environmental program of the region's development – improvement of public health and social services for the population of the Mykolayiv region and development of utilities. UAH 191.8 million of the allocated fundings has already been spent on such programs.
According to expert estimates, due to the project over the next eight years, the revenues of the South-Ukraine NPP may increase twentyfold, exceeding UAH 4.5 billion per year.
For reference: SS «South-Ukrainian NPP» is the only power complex in Ukraine with integrated use of basic nuclear capacities along with maneuverable hydro- and hydro-storage capacities. It consists of the South-Ukraine NPP and the HPP-HPSPP Cascade (Oleksandrivska HPP and Tashlyk HPSPP).
Annually the power complex produces 17-20 billion KW/h of electric power which is about 10% of total electric power producing in the country. It is sufficient to provide with normal conditions of life activity in Mykolayiv, Odesa, Kherson and Kirovograd regions with a population of five million people.
